WHY TO SUPPORT "PRERNA" |
|
|
|
Challenges Ahead |
|
|
|
►Infant Mortality |
|
|
|
The community
stress on account of Infant Mortality is still
a matter of concern in states like Bihar,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh,
Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh. The relative
high Infant Mortality influences the level of
expectations regarding member of surviving
children containing Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR)
and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has direct
bearing with maternal health status. Early
marriage and early pregnancy perpetuate NMR/IMR.

►Childrens'
Nutritional Status |
|
|
|
Childrens'
Nutritional status is directly related to
Health status. Compromised Nutritional Status
leads to not only ill health but substantially
increases the chances of a number of
infections because of low immunity levels.
More the number of children in a family less
is the share of food for each child and hence
proportionate degrees of malnutrition. |

►Total Fertility Rate |
|
|
|
The replacement
level of population requires 2.1 TFR, which
remains very high in Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya
Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar
Pradesh (i.e between 2.4 to 4). The efforts to
regulate TFR and finally bringing it down to
2.1 entails use of spacing methods as also
permanent sterilization. One of the
requirement under "Prerna" strategy is
sterilization by either parent after second
child. |

►Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) |
|
|
|
The lowest MMR in
India is even higher than that in developed
countries. States like Uttar Pradesh, Assam,
Rajasthan, Bihar, Orissa still show very high
MMR. The predominant cause of high MMR in
Indian states is early marriage. Coupled with
early / frequent pregnancies without spacing
contributes to high MMR. JSK's "Prerna"
directly addresses this issue. |

Considering the
goal of achieving replacement level fertility
(2.1 TFR) by 2010, current scenario points to
long time lag. |
